MIDDLE EAST AND IT’S FABRICS…

Detalle con piedras Swarovski

You always find time to go shopping! We went in and out of so many shops in Doha, Qatar. I loved looking at the outfits they wear for special occasions. What materials! What designs! What intricate details! What colors! Everything was spectacular!

We went into one shop. It was tiny but there were 4 or 5  shop assistants who were selling fabulous things, such as headscarves, dresses, precious stone beading, assessories to sew on dresses. What caught my eye was a sort of black cape. I liked the way it fell. I touched it and loved the feel of the material, so I decided to try it on but couldn’t get my head through. While I kept trying I heard some giggling in the background.

As I couldn’t see a thing, my friend explained that the assistants were all splitting their sides. I enquired why they were all in fits. They burst out laughing and told me that it wasn’t worn like that as it was a Khimar – a kind of Burka!

That didn’t bother me. I liked the material so much that I asked the assistants to enlarge the hole a little so I could get my head through and to make two more holes for my arms. So as not to see the central seam they would have to make, I suggested they sewed some Swarovsky rhinestones along it. And … This was the result…
